How To Disable System Restore

Anti trojan and virus scanners cannot remove trojans or viruses from windows system restore directories. If you find a trojan or virus in any directory that has the word restore in it then you will probably have to disable system restore. PLEASE DO NOT DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE unless the infected file is located in the system restore directory

  Windows Millennium Edition (Me)

The System Restore feature is enabled by default. To disable System Restore:

1 - Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2 - On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
3 - On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
4 - Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

  Windows XP

Use the following steps to disable System Restore in Windows® XP.

Open Control Panel.

From the Windows XP default Start menu, click Control Panel.
From the Windows XP classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

In Control Panel, open the System Properties window.

If the computer is in Category View, click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
If the computer is in Classic View, double-click the System icon.

In the System Properties window, click the System Restore tab.
On the System Restore tab, click Turn off system restore or Turn off system restore on all drives, and then click Apply.
In the System Restore dialog box, click Yes.
In the System Properties window, click OK.
